the stock rom is no good. at bare minimum i'd install one of the user roms.
There is plenty of resources on this site for backing up contacts etc. if you're wanting to, prior to a new rom load. Or you can set up a live sync account at live.mail2web.com - which i would definitely recommend.
if you must stay stock, i believe you need to (from memory):
-install a piece of software off the CD that came with the phone
-start up tethering on phone
-setup phone software on pc to dial #777
-hook up phone
-dial
