no. the temperature control is not overriden.

this is a problem with the measurement hardware, so I can't really do anything about it. Its really the nature of trying to gauge liIon batteries.

uh, really? That seems really doubtful, unless it was a really crappy motherboard or something... especially since your computer supposedly doesn't start anymore.. USB specs require the port to be regulated and offer over-current protection, if not on individual ports then at least on the root hub, and each usb port is supposed to have a self-resettable fuse....

I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but care to post the details?
