I've been using Fring for quite a while now and have been very happy with it. Yes, it uses more resources than palringo, but it's actually a VOIP client first that just happens to have a very good multi-protocol im client built in. The VOIP is skype compatible and works ok, but I mostly use it as an im client. They've also built in an add-on structure that supports stuff like facebook, twitter, etc. The WM version is a bit slow to get new updates, but it is very usable. Oh, and free is good...
