I can't speak for the dialer mapping, as I don't use that. I've read about a program that does it, which is likely what you've already tried.

For the softkey mapping, it's an easy regedit. I've never had a problem with it. Just make sure you write the correct path.

Change the soft keys on the home screen.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila]

Change either HomeLSKPath or HomeRSKPath (where L = left softkey, and R= right softkey). HomeLSKText/HomeRSKText = the text displayed on your screen.
