Not true. Here is what you do, but you gotta be familiar with the startup routine on your phone.
Install SOTI from the PC with your computer connected to Activesync. You will have to press the ok button to accept on the phone to install to main memory and ok to exit the installer. Once that is done you can view your phone from the computer when it is connected and you will be able to activate, back it up, hard reset, whatever you want even though the screen is broken, the image on your PC will be flawless. I used this many times in your same situation.
