Can't see the dial pad on Verizon TP

Hello all, I have a Verizon Touch Pro (6850) with the stock ROM and very little third party software. When I press the send button on the face of the phone (the green hardware button) I would expect to get the dialing keypad on the touch screen. Instead I get a list of the most recent people I have called (call history). How can I bring up the touch keypad instead of the call history? I can dial by opening the keyboard and typing the numbers but shouldn't I be able to see a dial number pad on screen that I can tap witht he stylus, like my Tilt 8925, when I open the Phone application either by the menu shortcut or by pressing the send button?
thank yu
Frank
