I think this happens because the phone is lagging... So when you turn the backlight off, the phone might still be processing something. Soft Reset does clear this, something else strange about this behavior, is when I turn the phone back on while the backlight is on, I see a brief checkerboard flash.
The only thing that I can think of that may be the issue is the TCPMP install with all of the h264, ac3 and flash-bundle goodness that goes along with it.
I just find myself looking very closely to the phone after I hit the power button before sticking it in my holster/pocket...
