Just a heads-up/warning as lots of people have made this mistake before:

Setting to "EVDO Only" will disable incoming phone calls and SMS (outgoing will still work though). I've used that mode once or twice on purpose as a sort of "do not disturb" setting when I didn't want incoming calls to interrupt a data session. But just keep in mind that is the consequence to putting it in that mode.

For most people most of the time "Automatic" is the correct mode, as the phone will try to always choose EV if it's available and will revert to 1x in all other cases (as well as for phone calls and SMS, which can't travel on the EV-DO network).

For people in marginal signal locations, "1x Only" is sometimes the best mode, as otherwise the phone constantly tries to switch to an EVDO signal that is really not strong enough for the phone to actually use--resulting in a ping-pong game between the two towers which runs down the battery like crazy.
