Some people find it easier, like when calling your bank or credit card company and having to type in numbers and prompts at various times during the call. Some prompts have very short timeouts, and if you fumble around not pressing the power quickly enough and typing in your numbers, you'll have to redo it.
Also, I never hold the phone directly on my face. I press the speaker of the phone on my ear, but there is no screen up there anyways. So having the screen on really isn't an issue. And if it is gonna be a long call, you can just manually press the power button to turn the screen off save some battery.
