That's cooked into most ROM's, and I personally believe it helps a bit with idle time, but does nothing for reducing the battery drain while being used. It just keeps the device from polling the battery as often. It also makes your battery meter not as accurate, since it doesn't poll information. I notice my battery often drains 3% at a time, instead of 1%, because the phone hasn't polled the battery as often.
