I set up my e-mail to forward all incoming to my sms. Just use your e-mail to sms address (mine is
705XXXXXXX@msg.telus.com). Then you just check your e-mail manually when you are alerted by the text message. You get your mail even faster than checking every 5 minutes and there is no effect on battery.
