When I installed Smartphone Tracker by cab, there was no need for it to always run in the background. The only time it would show up in DotFred was if it intercepted a sms. It would, however, continue to run once triggered until it obtained a gps fix and successfully sent the email. The version that I installed had a text file that you could open to see exactly what the app did or was doing.
