i know the stie has gotten a lot better. i run a site for my clan (on dreamhost actually), and basically took the db server i'm on down one night after i switched from phpbb (we ended up the subject of a massive spam attack) to smf. of course, what happened was i optimized the tables for the first time after i switched some from MyISAM to InnoDB. in all honesty, i find smf to be a lot nicer than phpbb, a lot easier to install mods (for dreamhost, just download them to your desktop and then upload/install them). its also about twice as fast now that we switched over, and i'm sure there is a mod to archive old posts to html pages. i think i will look for that one tomorrow night actually.
