OKAY.. I got it to work again and this time, I know what I did!
In the bluetooth menu on your phone, hit the tab on the far right, "Security" and turn on "Authentication (Passkey) required".
When I did that and re-paired my headset, it asked for a passcode, I put in the default generic code of "0000". Now, the icon for my headset appears as a little MP3/Walkman instead of a picture of a headset.
Prior to doing this, I just paired the headset and it connected, no request for a passkey so I didn't bother fiddling with the settings.
My headset actually works BETTER now with the phone after doing this!
One tap to connect. One tap to activate MSVC. Hold to redial last number!
I applied some registry hacks I found here but they are not relevant - boost mic gain and boost earpiece volume.
I hope this helps relieve someone out there of the angished I endured!
