You might also try loading the program that just kills the screen and map it to a hardware button. If you're in a low signal area and need to leave roaming on, you might get better luck by using that to just turn off the screen instead of using the power button to put it to sleep. I haven't tested to see whether the screen turns on when going into roaming that way, but it's worth a shot.
