This whole issue about de-fragmenting the database, I think this is what TreoCentral does every night at 3am--the site goes down for about 15 mins and I bet it's to do this kind of maintenance, (then again I know nothing of this stuff).

Out of curiosity, what "system" does TreoCentral use? I find it the most friendly for searching and using, plus it seems quite fast (I need "Search this thread" and "Search Members" as features! )
Many large forums run VBulletin instead of phpBB due to its superior database architecture and mad admin controls. phpBB is also free, a license for Vbb could run you $200, IIRC.

VBulletin is superior to PHPBB because its been around longer, and has more developer support. It also has a built-in archiving system (similar to the prune feature in phpBB but archives the posts to static HTML pages)...but as I pointed out earlier it costs money. Also should be run from a dedicated server.
