IMHO=On:
This is no longer necessary. This was for the older devices (Apache and Mogul that I've had) that had an extended rom. The reason for the hard reset was to ensure the extended rom information got copied to the phone portion of memory completely. And the hard reset did another copy of the rom image.

I have not done this since my mogul days, flash probably 20 times a week and have no issues. I may recommend a soft reset (for some settings to take), but a hard reset is useless since the information for the rom is written to the place it stays when you flash.

It was recommended 10,000 PPC Years ago (2 human years), but not necessary for modern devices.

This concludes my educated guess... IMHO... bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep...
