So... everything else seems ok, but should I just hold off on setting up the phone all over again? Is the benefit of the newer XIP worth it? Or should I just go back to default ssk 1.2 and restore my backup?

CRAP!!! I just figured out what I screwed up. There are two copies of os.nb.payload in the ZIP file. Ignore the one in the ROM folder - replace it with the one in the root of the ZIP. The correct one is size 3200, the wrong one is size 3456 bytes.
Also, make sure to copy all the XIP files to the right places:
os.nb.payload in ROM
boot.rgu in ROM\XIP
.VM folder in SYS
.ROM folder in SYS
Make sure the kitchen is running g'reloc.exe (it will say relocating modules). If it still doesn't work, go back to the .VM and .ROM from the kitchen.
I will upload a new ZIP to the XIP thread.
