My WiFi has worked on both encrypted WEP with broadcast SSID, and on an open network using a hidden SSID. WiFi has worked on the stock ROM and several of the SSK ROMs.
(I know that you said your router is unsecured... but, I would say that the issue of the devices seeing each other but not connecting is an issue of a handshake not being p***** between the devices. One is waiting to connect, the other is waiting for a password. So they just sit and wait.... ending up with a timed out connection. Double and triple check your settings on the phone and the router.
