I hate to be that guy that says, "You're doign something wrong", but you shouldn't get ANY spam if you use Gmail and are careful about who you give your email out to. I've had my main Gmail account for three years and have never had a single bit of spam.

My hotmail, however, gets several hundred a week. I use this email to register for sites I dont necessarily trust and only check it when I'm expecting something like a confirmation email.

I would just recommend registering for a Gmail account and being careful and retiring your old email for what I've described above.

IMO, spam filters should never be needed. The only time I've needed a spam filter is on my company email because of how careless some idiots are with their computers while they work from home.
