As the phone is charging, it causes the internal temperature of the battery to rise. If there is a temperature sensing device that is monitoring the battery, it can cause the charging circuit to shut down....so it essentially doesn't destroy the battery. Some of those circuits will restart automatically after the temp drops, but, in this one, I'm thinking that once it triggers, you have to manually remove the cable and then re-insert the cable to continue charging.
