I suspect it was that latter. I used gloves like suggested. The crack shape bubbles, formed mostly around the edges of the cover and the edges of the camera cover in the middle. When I scraped the bubble sections off, the enamel did stick to it underneath, so I supsect there shouldn't be a problem putting it right onto the plastic base. Sanding it down and trying again should work just fine, I'll give it a go later tonight and post results, or failures, again.
