You cannot receive calls if you have an active 1x data connection. 1x technology does not allow the tower to notify your phone of an incoming call when data is actually transferring back and forth (it will ring through fine if the connection is idle though).

With EV-DO, even with an active data connection, the tower can still communicate with your phone to say "hey you've got a call here". Your phone (depending on its DDTM setting) will then place your data session on hold and allow you to take the call. Once you're done with it (or if you don't answer) the data connection will resume.

This doesn't mean that data and voice can coexist--just that you can switch back and forth--sort of like call waiting. Think of 1x as being a line without call waiting--incoming calls will go direct to your voicemail if you're on an active data call. With EV-DO, the call can get through for you to answer it if you want.
