Today I used my phone all day with GPS toggled off and had 60% battery by the end of the day.
I'm not sure how true that is. I d/l it, and installed it. The HTC tool was running, and showing data coming. I still had data coming in even after cycling GPSToggle On/OFF. No matter what I did, I could always see sats with the GPSTool. Using BATTLOG (which shows current draw every second), did not show any significant changes with GPSToggle on or off.

This was just a very cursory test, so you might want to try it yourself. I just wanted a quick check.

Edit: I just rebooted, and with both data off and WIFI off, using the HTC GPSTool, I was able to get satellites. So, GPS On/Off, has nothing to do with your battery improvement. Even just turning "Data" on, didn't change the current draw....although I wasn't pulling email or anything else....It was just turned on. It may have been your usage pattern that day. The biggest current change is if WIFI, not DATA is turned on.
