Re: Windows Mobile out sold the iPhone in Q4 2008

Its good to hear, but not really unexpected to me.

Looking at the U.S. alone...Windows Mobile can be purchased for AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Altell. They come from motorola, HTC, Palm, LG, and others.

Then you have the iPhone...who is available on AT&T, and made by Apple.

If Windows Mobile DIDN'T sale more, and at least a good bit more, I'd say that would've been a catastrophic problem for WinMo.

MS only makes the money off the OS being out there, while Apple makes the money off of the phone AND the OS. That's 4.4 million phones where the money for it is going all to Apple (primarily) while that's 5 million phones where the money is being split between 2 groups.

This is kind of like a boxer beating up a one armed man. Can the one armed man still throw punches? Yes, but its not really much of an accomplishment if you only get a decision win. This was a decision win for WinMo...not a knock out.

If anything this could be a bad thing, making MS think there is no need to hurry and get Windows Mobile 7 out, which would be folly. With the greater number of carriers providing it, and the greater number of phone choices out there, WinMo should be up by well over a million phone sales if it was a vastly superior product for the CONSUMER (not the extreme enthusiest) instead of 600k .
