I should mention that I am a medical student and all I really need is epocrates.

2 things I want to say, if you are going into your rotations for 3rd and 4th year, I'm not sure the Palm Pre will have Epocrates for a while, and the G1 doesn't have it yet. So if you really need epocrates right away, you'll want the older Palm OS, WM, blackberry, or an iPhone (Palm OS and WM support the full version of epocrates)
The other is that if you are really worried about something happening to your phone, a viable option is to have it insured independently. My phone (it's covered under personal property) is insured for $500 (I have a TP) with no deductible and it is $45 a year. It is covered for theft and accidental destruction (note: minor scratches and such are not covered). Of course, they also insure my car and condo, so I might be getting a good deal, I'm not sure. It's State Farm if you were wondering.
Hope this helps.
