+1 with what Hoover said. Start by reading through this forum and probably the Software Forum. Sadly there are no real shortcuts to learning this stuff...just keep reading, searching, and tweaking your phone.

And by all means get a good back-up program and use it (e.g., SPB Backup, etc.).
