If you have a weak signal your data will switch over to 1x in order to maintain a connection. When this happens, data stops for a minute while it reconnects. 1x is also much slower than EVDO, so it may seem like you have no data flowing at all. Sprint wouldn't actually STOP you from using data, they would just charge you for it.
