I've done this, twice. Usually I sync with my computer at work. Twice I've accidentally synced with my computer at home, and it erased all of my contacts. I was always able to get them back by syncing when I got back to work (carefully), but I've been screwed for the holiday or weekend.

I use PIM backup now too. Don't even bother syncing my contacts anymore. I just back them up.
