a rom is the core operating system to say the least... A person will take the STOCK ROM, tweak/modify/update/remove-junk and recompile it for us to "Flash"(process of putting it on the phone) to our devices... now it breaks warranty because you have to security unlock your phone to do this, but it makes a WORLD of a difference... and you'll have to put the stock ROM back on if something happens and you wanna take it in for warranty replacement... NEVER tell the sprint guy you've unlocked and flashed a new rom...

does that give you a minor idea mah man?
