I use my phone to play music at work a lot and the best way i have found to save battery is turn off gps(my location) and set sync to 30 minutes or 1 hour. When i do these 2 things i can listen to music from my sdhc card pretty much all day without much too much battery trouble. Also i have a spare battery just in case.
