The accelerometer name is kind of a misnomer, it doesn't really measure acceleration of the device, it just detects forces acting on it (gravity) to determine orientation. Hold the phone still and it shows an "acceleration" of 9.8m/s. But the phone isn't accelerating when you hold it still.
