Being I also has a 1Tb NAS drive I feel you. However, the router does decide which mode to go in when it is set to a mixed mode. My only question is how do you know it is going in B and not G mode? Are you looking at your speeds and assuming that or are you seeing it another way. If you have 2 laptops wireless and a Xbox 360 wireless all on G and then a another older laptop on B, everything will be on B no matter if the others are set for G or not. So do yuo have anything else in the house on B? If not then take your router out of mixed mode and go to only G and see what you get. However, you will not get 54 or anywhere near it due to, you guessed it, hardware limitations.
