There are definitely drastic differences between phones. My boss bought a new TouchPro from Best Buy the first day they where available. That phone was the biggest pile of garbage I have ever seen & he returned it for a refund a week later (he has a Blackberry now). That TP had every single problem listed on these boards & then some. It got smoking hot with very little use, the hardware KB didn't work right, the case was coming apart two days after he got it, it was HORRIBLY laggy, the ear-piece was virtually unusable etc etc etc etc
My boss is just a regular guy (not a geek at all) & he simply wanted a phone that worked out of the box (he got that with the Blackberry) with no fixes/tweaks etc etc
I knew the TP's couldn't all be as bad as his, so I decided to give one a shot also. I have Verizon service (I dropped Sprint after two years of AWFUL service/coverage etc) but was not going to buy the gimped vz version of the TP. I crossed my fingers, hoped for the best & bought a Sprint TP off ebay from a seller with thousands of positive feedbacks & activated it on vz with the leaked vz ROM.
The 2 phones could not be any more opposite, the one I got from ebay is absolutely perfect. The ear-piece is fine even without a new audiopara, the hardware buttons are perfectly flush, the phone gets warm but not alarmingly hot etc etc etc etc. I have tweaked the hell out of it, but nothing I have done is a "fix" really, I have just customized it to my liking.
I use a ton of data, my GPS & Sling Mobile work just fine etc etc. Really the only complaint I have about the phone is the awful battery life but I expected that. I have two USB cradles (one at home & one on my desk at work). The cradles will charge the phone & an extra batt simultaneously & I have three extra Seidio batteries so I always carry a spare.
