Had the same problem as you with a new Sprint Touch Diamond. I added the key and it didn't work, but I can confirm these steps worked:
HKLM/Software/HTC/HTCAnimation/
Several keys existed, 4 specifically (ShutDownGif, ShutDownWav, StartupGif, StartupWav). I renamed to place a "1" after each as they were all binary data keys. Succesfully removed the sound and animation.
