I just unplug. The only time I use the Stop Device function in XP is for an actual spinning external HD, because I figure that's the only one that is likely to maybe suffer something severe if that's not done. For solid state memory devices I doubt they could ever have anything more than a corrupt file if they were yanked out while being written to.

In device manager, while the phone is plugged in, you can set the properties for "fast removal" although that's probably on by default.
