Without knowing much about your phone, and not being able to really use it currently, why would you even consider a custom rom first?? That makes no sense lol. The data connection/internet is a known problem but one that can easily be fixed. Do a search for it as I don't have a link. The roaming only has been discussed heavily as well so I suggest you do a search for that as well.
