Getting ICS or WModem.EXE to work w/ Kitchen ROM & Sprint?

Ok, I am trying to get ICS working in windows vista, or wmodem.

So far heres what I've tried with no luck:

1) Select connection 'SprintPCS' (instead of phone as modem, scared to use that sprint could detect it)

2) Ensure USB cable is connected to phone & pc then click 'Connect'

3) I am unable to ping google or browse the web at this point.

Determined, I decided to try a handy backup copy of wmodem.exe (since the one in the \windows\ folder doesnt seem to execute for some odd reason). I copied it from my host PC to the device, erased the SprintPCS connection from Settings -> Connections, then ran it, The Yellow light is not lit, meaning the device is ready to be put into a modem, but the "Start" and "Stop" buttons are grey and cannot be clicked (???)

Any ideas or guides on how to get this to work would be appreciated. Im using the most recent kitchen release.

Thanks a ton
ps - the phone has the ICS control application but i rather use WModem its faster.. also im unfamiliar with this app and dont know if it features port forwarding and such that i would need.. id rather stick to traditional Internet Connection Sharing/Wmodem. thanks
