My workaround has been: Go into Comm Manager, toggle(turn off then turn back on) the "Data Connection" and toggle the "Microsoft Direct Push" in that order. *Poof* Emails begin arriving the moment they appear in Inbox.

Theory: Perhaps the act of connecting the Diamond to my PC via USB cable shuts down the data connection on the phone. Then, when removing, it does not start back up. At least not perfectly. Toggling both items is my fix.

One more thing... You may be able to tell Active Synch to allow data connections(on the Diamond) while hooked to the USB cable. I haven't tried this yet, but it may be another workaround.

Hope that's clear.
I have had this same problem with the Mogul and now with my Diamond. I fix it the same way you do and have come to the same conclusion as you about the cuase.
