The only commerical IM program that had SMS-relay was Verichat (that is, it was a hybrid: your IM app went into SMS mode in standby. When an IM message came in, it was via SMS. If you wanted to have the IM chat, it went direct-connect. Best of both worlds, as SMS for pure IM can be unreliable).

Blame Nokia for buying them and killing the app.

Octro gets the best battery life (see pocketpc mags IM bible by mennisys, which compares everything in all IM apps).

I suggest emailng Octro asking for SMS support. They are aware of the request (I asked for it when they first started) but showing that people who are willing to pay for a program that does SMS-relay may get them to try and implement such a method.
