This does not sound like a hardware problem to me.
Does this happen after a hard reset without you making any changes to the device? I know you said no programs were installed, but also no e-mail set up, no control panels touched, nothing? That's the true way to test it. Hard reset, allow extrom to install, then open an app and give a quick press of the power button to suspend--then again to resume.
If it still does it in that scenario then perhaps people are getting units with slightly different software or something. I highly doubt it, but I can't think of anything hardware-related that would cause this problem.
