As you say: Different strokes. . .
However, there is a difference between optomized and functional.
From a functional point, if you are constantly grabbing the phone out of a shirt pocket and pressing these buttons, it gets annoying every time the phone rings or chirps and you have to first 'close' or clear the volume app and then see who sent you a message or who the call is coming from. By the time you answer a call it has gone to voicemail . . .
If you have a better idea about dealing with the problem I would love to hear it!?
The volume control buttons on the Sprint version of the Touch Pro are larger (longer) than most buttons on HTC decvices in this area of the phone (upper left side). They also stick out a little farther and are easier to depress. I suspect that the fact that the case and apparently the buttons are metel and not plastic or metal coated plastic has something to do with it. I am sure the way you form a metel frame has some restrictions that plastic does not. This may also be the reason the Sprint or CDMA version is a little taller.
I think that HTC has made the same mistake they made with the AT&T 8125 that the 8525 later fixed; they added a Menu Start button and and End/Close (X) button along with the thimb wheel. While we do not need a thumb wheel with TouchFlo and a Start button is questonble, there is an awful lot of unused real estate on the phone.
