This is like saying "Why get a computer without internet access?" When the correct question would be "Why get a MODEM without internet access?"
PPC without a data plan?
It's because some of us actually use the other 90% of the PPC's capabilities.

The world has changed a lot over the past several years. Yea, when I got my Palm OS PDA years ago, it was quite useful without a direct internet connection. An occasional (once per week) connection to the internet, thru my home PC, was more than enough to keep all its data up-to-date.
However, today, I would want a PDA/Smartphone with nearly constant internet connection. Not only to browse the web while sitting in a booth, or in a waiting room, but to also check my email, neither of which my old Palm OS PDA can do.
At least for me, there are few open, public, WiFi networks in my daily wunderings. My employeer has a very tight WiFi network and doens't allow any personal devices to attach. So, that locks me out for 10+ hours per day.
So, I would need a data plan if I was going to get any meaningful usage out of a xv6850. However, I will openly admit, even though I was going to get the $30 data plan anyway, it does irk me that VZW will now require it of me.
