I would deal with this problem if I got the phone for, say, $99, but $299 AND a two-year agreement is out of the question.

Yes exactly, If I got my phone for cheaper then I wouldn't care so much since I'd just get a second battery and move on with it. I just don't understand how HTC can let such an obvious design flaw slide through to the customer. I was on the phone last night and it kept getting warm, warmer and the battery wouldn't charge anymore...it gets very annoying when you have to periodically watch the phone to see if it's charging or not.
I'm not sure what we have to do to make them aware of this, I guess the best way would be for everyone to return their defective phones and then sprint sits up and takes notice, however, no one is ready to do that. Plus, jumping through sprint's customer service hoops is no easy task. Hope we find a solution to this soon.
P.S: Anyone notice Sprint is not selling the Touch anymore? It's just the Diamond/Pro on their website...Interesting since I was thinking about switching to the Touch and not having to deal with these battery issues...
