I had this problem on my wife's diamond after applying the "old school word correction" registry hack. I know hibby has this built into his ROM so that is more than likely your problem, because once I changed it back on hers it worked normally again.
Change this registry key..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Layouts\e0010409] Set "Ime File"="\windows\eT9ime.dll" and "Layout Text"="eT9 IME"
