The ignition is only partly IR. You still have to rotate the cylinder to start the car. Only the code to tell the computer its ok to start is IR. I wonder if you could take a code learning IR remote and learn the code from the key and then rotate the cylinder without the actual Mercedes key with say pliers, screwdriver, general thief type tools ). I think the car tells the key when to transmit the code though so I dont know how you could easily get it to send while facing a learning remote.
