it has nothing to do with the accelerometer, the light sensor is really all that is working to actually silence the phone. I have both the diamond and touch pro, and they work fine as far as silencing. it may be a problem with your light sensor, try a hard reset, and if it still does not work, i would suggest a replacement phone.
