A common hardware issue. What happens is the d-stick gets pushed too hard at some point and becomes either non-responsive or hyper-responsive.
Take it back to the place you got it and have them replace it with the insurance you got with your $600 phone. Put the OEM ROM back on before you do so- that will also give you the opportunity to make sure the ROM isn't the issue.
