Who did you talk to? If it was Sprint customer service, then they routinely give out bad information. I don't think Asurion cares how you got the phone. As long as it has a clean esn and activates, they'll add insurance. The same Sprint customer service assured me I could add insurance on my phone after 30 days, which is completely wrong and would waste my money.
