I know one thing that messed up MMS for me was installing HTC Audio Manager (although I didn't realize it at the time).

SMS still worked, but MMS did not work at all (I have verizon service). Deleting AM did not fix the problem either, but installing an Arcsoft cab did (after I spent two weeks trying to figure out what went wrong)
